昆十中国际部加拿大高中加方副校长纳塞尼尔•斯威尔斯代表学校参加了本次比赛。他的演讲《爱的光芒照耀教育之路》朴实无华地反映了他在昆十中工作的一年时间里的所思所感,不仅感动了在场的所有观众,更获得了评委的一致好评。
最终,这位来自共产主义战士白求恩故乡的外教在47名选手中脱颖而出,获得了本次演讲比赛的一等奖。

大家好,上个世纪三十年代,“有这样一个外国人,毫无利己的动机,把中国人民的解放事业当作他自己的事业”,他就是诺尔曼·白求恩。今天,另一位加拿大人将站在这个演讲台上,讲述昆十中和他的故事。

大家好,我想问大家几个简单的问题:你是否还记得曾经喜欢的一位老师?你为什么喜欢他?也许他们是你小学、初中、高中,或大学的老师,也许多年后你只记住了他。那么,是什么让你这么多年后还对恩师念念不忘?因为他们对教育深沉的爱,我永远无法忘却我最喜欢的老师们。他们爱每一位学生,他们爱孩子们所做的事情,这种爱随时在一间又一间的教室里传递着。他们激励着我每天努力地工作,期望我也能如他们一样平凡而伟大。我希望自己也能成为学生们最喜欢的老师,更希望自己也能用他们的方式来教育和激励学生。
昆十中国际部的学生已经感到,他们非常幸运地能拥有来自中国和加拿大两个国家的优秀教师,因为这里的每一位老师心中都深藏着对教育的热爱。这种爱已然成为普通教师与优秀教师的最大区别。而我坚信,我们不仅从最喜爱的老师那里可以学到爱,更能在爱的光芒中获取成功与幸福。

(翻译插入:在昆十中有这样一位老师,每天我们都能在求实校区的第一缕晨曦中见到他的身影,他热爱教育事业,更热爱他的学生。我们每天都能看到他和一个来自单亲家庭,学习主动性差,内向而又倔强的孩子形影不离,他每天都要花上一、两小时帮他制定学习计划、督促检查他的作业,培养孩子的兴趣爱好。慢慢地,这个孩子开始愿意和他交流,分享生活的点滴快乐与进步。现在,老师和同学们都非常明显的感受到了他的进步。
在课外,你也能看到他活跃在同学们的中间。运动场上,你能看到他以专业摄影师的角度记录孩子们的运动才能;在十中的合唱节上,你能够看到他激情澎湃地担当着合唱指挥员,和孩子们共同享受音乐的美好。因为他希望,20年后,当已经长大成人的学生们被问起他们最喜欢老师是谁的时候,他深深地希望学生们能回答就是他。
这个人就是站在台上的这位可爱的、胖胖的老外。在准备演讲的过程中,我希望他能讲一讲自己,但他却说在他的信仰里,自我赞美是一种罪过。此刻,我真诚地希望在座的朋友们能够把最热烈的掌声送给这个不远万里来到中国的胖老外,是他让我体会到了对教育事业的执着与热爱是怎样的一种情怀。)
我刚才问大家是否能记住最喜欢的老师这个问题,那是因为我相信,无论你们来自哪个国家、属于哪种文化,不管他是中国人还是加拿大人,优秀的老师在全世界都是一样的。他们每一个人的心中都深藏着对教育的爱,这种爱无法隐藏的,这种爱体现在每一个国家,更体现在每一位优秀的老师的心中。

What Sets Great Teachers Apart

Hello ladies and gentlemen.
I want to ask you a simple question: do you remember a favourite teacher? Take a minute to about the question. Do you remember a favourite teacher? Maybe they were in primary school, maybe in middle school, high school, or university, but probably you can remember one or two teachers that even now – all these years later (and it has been a few years for me at least) – sticks out in your mind as someone special. Now think about why. What was it about that teacher that has stuck with you through all these years? I know I can remember my favourite teachers. They all embodied a love of teaching and learning that was contagious. They loved what they did, and that love was evidenced in their classrooms. I remember them. I remember them often because I strive to be like them each and every day. I want to be my students' favourite teacher. I want to inspire people they way I was inspired by my favourite teachers so many years ago.
Students in the schools I work with –
I know of two such individuals, my colleagues, who are excellent head teachers in Kunming No. 10 Middle School. Both are dedicated to teaching and students. They work hard to ensure proper lessons are prepared for their students, as all good teachers should, but they also do more. When a student is sick, they are the first people who send them to hospital. When a student is having difficulties in class, they will take extra time to spend with the student to help them improve. In basic terms, these two head teachers I speak of not only see their students as students who should sit behind desks and learn lessons, but as individuals who also need care. These teachers love their students, they love to teach their students, and they love to learn themselves.
I asked each of you to take a moment to remember your favourite teacher just now because I believe that no matter what country or culture you come from, whether it be China or Canada, great teachers exist and are the same all over the world. Each one of them holds within themselves a love of learning and teaching which is easily recognizable. A love that cannot be easily hid, and which I have seen in each of our countries.
